Richard (Dick) D. Winters was born on January 21, 1918, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He resided with this parents Richard and Edith Winters in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. He spent his time playing in the farm fields and stockyards. When he was thirteen, his family moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was at this time that Winters's younger sister, Ann, was born. Winters attended Franklin and Marshall College because it was located a short distance from his house. He spent the entire summer before starting college doing odd jobs to raise the money he needed to go to school.

During college, he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. In 1941, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. Winters enlisted in the United States Army on August 8, 1941. At this time, he had hoped to shorten his time in service. He was hoping to avoid a full term of service due to the draft. By enlisting on his own, Winters planned on serving a one year tour instead of three. During basic training he often wrote home to a local girl named Annid DeEtta Almon. Born January 21, 1918 in New Holland, Pennsylvania, Dick had a very average childhood alongside his parents Richard Sr. and Edith. In 1937 he was enrolled at Franklin and Marshall College, a private liberal arts university in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of Economics. Following his graduation, in the summer of 1941 Winters enlisted in the United States Army. Marking the day in his journal, Winters wrote “I had no desire to get into the war,” but did so to fulfill the mandatory one year of service under the recently ratified Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 (America’s first peacetime conscription ordinance). Richard D. Winters was born on 21 January 1918 in Ephrata, PA, to Richard and Edith Winters. He moved to nearby Lancaster when he was eight years old. He graduated from Lancaster Boys High School in 1937 and matriculated to Franklin and Marshall College.

At Franklin and Marshall, Winters was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and participated in intramural football and basketball as a member of Upsilon Chapter. He had to give up wrestling, his favorite sport, and most of his social activities, for his studies and the part-time jobs that paid his way through college. He graduated in 1941 with the highest academic standing in the business college. The war had broken out in Europe, and he enlisted in the Army.

Winters enlisted in the U.S. Army on 25 August 1941, in order to shorten his time in service. In September, he underwent basic training at Camp Croft, SC. Afterward; he remained at Camp Croft to help train draftees and other volunteers, while the rest of his battalion was deployed
