GUITAR maestro Jimmy Dludlu has been conspicuous by his absence from the Joburg jazz scene for several years now, but thankfully, I managed to meet up with the popular musician for an interview recently.

Dludlu, who launched his new album, Tonota , at the Marco Polo Lounge in Sandton was lively and in a good mood.

The venue for the meeting was a northern suburbs hotel, where Dludlu reminisced about the good old days when live jazz was very much part of Johannesburg's music scene.

That was the scenario before he trekked to Cape Town with the aim of teaching at the University of Cape Town, where he graduated with a degree in jazz studies.

"Things have certainly changed in Johannesburg with regard to live jazz venues," Dludlu said.

"Cape Town, just like the rest of the country. has also been affected but in different ways by the global recession as well as by low CD sales and piracy.

Der gebürtige Mosambikaner spielte zum ersten Mal mit 13 Jahren auf einer selbstgebauten Gitarre seines Cousins. Er brachte sich das Gitarrespielen selbst bei, indem er Jazz und Afrikanische Musik imitierte, die er im Radio gehört hatte. Seine ersten Auftritte hatte er bei Hochzeiten in südafrikanischen Townships.

Dludlus Karriere startete Mitte der 1980er Jahre in verschiedenen Bands aus Swasiland und Botswana; er lebte eine Zeit bei George Lee Larnyoh und spielte dann bei McCoy Mrubata und begleitete auch Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Sipho Mabuse und Papa Wemba, arbeitete aber auch mit Winston Mankunku, Robbie Jansen und Victor Ntoni zusammen. 1993 spielte er auf dem Jazzfestival von Grahamstown mit Morris Goldberg, im Folgejahr mit Herb Ellis. 1996 trat er mit Courtney Pine auf dem Arts Alive Festival in Johannesburg auf.
