Sasaki kojiro cause of death

Useful Notes

Sasaki Kojiro (1585? - April 13, 1612) was one of the greatest swordsmen of the Sengoku/Edo periods, and is still known for his legendary duel against Miyamoto Musashi at Ganryujima.

Also known as Ganryu (he later named his martial arts school after it), he was trained by famous swordsmen in the art of wielding the kodachi (shortsword) and later the katana. By 1610, he became a powerful warrior, capable of fending off up to three opponents with a tessen(metal fan), and was named a Kensei, or "Sword Saint", someone who has perfectly mastered the blade. His favourite weapon was a nodachi called Bizen Osafune Nagamitsu which was also referred to with the less-formidable name of Monohoshizao (Laundry Pole).

He also developed a signature powerful sword technique called Tsubame Gaeshi (Swallow Return), a high-speed sword slash that changed direction at the last second.

Having found fame, Kojiro was eventually challenged by his long-term rival Musashi, and was killed at Ganryujima in April 1612. It's often thought that Musashi may have cheated, howev

Who Was Sasaki Kojiro and What Happened at Ganryu Island?

On the morning of the duel, Sasaki Kojiro arrived on Ganryu Island on time and immaculately groomed. By contrast, Musashi arrived three hours late and dishevelled.

Kojiro and the officials considered this a blatant show of disrespect and dishonourable contempt for the warrior code. In a fit of rage, Kojiro drew his scabbard and discarded his sheath, prompting Musashi to declare: ‘If you have no more use for your sheath, you are already dead.’

Musashi then further insulted Kojiro with his choice of weapon, unveiling a sword not of metal but of wood. It is believed to have been carved from an oar that morning and crucially, was an inch longer than his opponent’s weapon.

Many believe that Musashi’s actions that mild morning were designed to enrage Kojiro, to make him lose control. If so, it worked. Kojiro attacked first, and it was a fatal move.

Avoiding the blow, Musashi countered with a fatal strike. Sasaki Kojiro died.
