Biography:

Zhang Peili (b. 1957, Hangzhou) is an artist and Head of the New Media Department at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou.

Zhang graduated from the Oil Painting Department at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art) in 1984. The following year, he helped organize the exhibition ‘New Space' in which his oil paintings, including Midsummer Swimmers, Please Enjoy Some Jazz and Interval, were also shown.

In 1986, Zhang helped form the Pond Society with Geng Jianyi, Wang Qiang, Song Ling, Bao Jianfei, Cao Xuelei and others. In the late 1980s, he created a series of groundbreaking works like Yang’s Tai Chi, an innovative outdoor work, and two early experiments in conceptual, text-based art, About X?: Exhibition Procedures and Art Project No. 2. Zhang also created 30X30, a video work now recognized as the first video art piece in the history of Chinese contemporary art.

Born in 1957 in Hangzhou, Zhang Peili graduated from Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art) in 1984, where he now teaches. He is also the former executive director of OCAT Shanghai.

In 1985 and 1986, Zhang Peili organized and participated in the "'85 Xin Kong Jian" ('85 New Space) exhibition and artist collective "Chi She" （Pond Society）. His work "30x30" (1988) is considered the earliest video artwork in China. In 2003, he established the new media department at China Academy of Art and thus started the earliest new media art education in China.

Zhang Peili has participated in the Venice Biennale, la Biennale de Lyon, the Sydney Biennial, the Gwangju Biennial, the Busan Biennale, etc. Zhang has held solo exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; and the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, Gent. Zhang Peili (born 1957) is a Chinese contemporary artist. Considered the father of video art in China he works mainly with installation and video.^[1]

Biography

Zhang Peili was born in Hangzhou, China, in November 1957.^[2] He attended the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art)^[3] and graduated from the Department of Oil Painting in 1984. In 1986, Zhang and fellow artists Geng Jianyi and Song Li founded the Pond Society, an artist collective that became known for its existential bent and its interest in separating art and emotion and organising public happenings and interventions in Hangzhou.^[4] He currently lives and works in Hangzhou, as the dean of the New Media Department of the China Academy of Arts.
