  • 2. Birth  William Shakespeare was born April 23rd, 1564 in Stratford upon Avon.  He was baptized on April 26th.
  • 3. Family  William was the third child, and first son, of John and Mary Shakespeare.  John Shakespeare, was a whittawer, a maker of leather goods. (such as purses, belts and gloves).  John was also a prominent man in Stratford. By 1560, he was one of fourteen members of the town council.
  • 4. Education  Shakespeare attended the Stratford King’s Grammar School.  The school taught boys basic reading and writing.
  • 5. Marriage  On November 28th, 1582 William married Anne Hathaway of Stratford. Anne was 26.
  • 6. Children  William’s first child, Susanna, was baptized in Stratford sometime in May, 1583.  His twins, Hamnet and Judith, were born in February 1585.  Hamnet, William's only son, died in 1596, at just eleven years old.

  • 1.  This PowerPoint aims to introduce Form Two students to a unit on three (3) Shakespearean plays by briefly relating details about Shakespeare’s life and works.  At the end of this session, students will be able to quote three (3) of his famous phrases.
  • 2. After the presentation, the teacher will lead a class discussion where students will articulate what they have gleaned from the presentation. Subsequently, they will be separated into groups of four (4); each group will be given a paper with one (1) of the phrases and asked to draw a picture representing it. When the groups have finished, each will show their drawing and the class will guess which phrase has been represented. At the end of the exercise, they will be asked to write their three (3) favourite phrases.

    LEAH: Who was William Shakespeare? We know he looked something like this, but because he lived so long ago we don’t know a huge amount about his life.

    RICKY: But what we do know is that he is one of the greatest writers of plays the world has ever known…

    LEAH: Shakespeare wrote plays about almost everything.

    RICKY: He wrote about funny things.
