NAIROBI - Kenya's presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta was on Saturday declared 4th president after gaining 50.07 percent of total votes, chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Isaack Hassan announced.
"I therefore declare Uhuru Kenyatta the duly elected president of the Republic of Kenya," the chairman said, adding Kenyatta attained 25 percent in 32 out of 47 counties required to avoid a run-off.
For an outright victory in the first round, a candidate must garner at least 50 percent plus one of all votes cast, in addition to getting at least 25 percent of the votes in 24 counties out of 47.
Kenyatta, son of the founding president of Kenya, defeated its closest rival Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Today I watched my friend Willis Raburu interview Attorney General Prof. Githu Muigai in the on-going Citizen TV series, Newsmakers. During the interview, the AG noted that his youngest son is currently studying film production. He did not say where, but it is more than likely that his son is studying in Europe or North America. Raburu’s interview with the AG reminded me of an observation I have been making for some time now. Uhuru’s first major appearance after leaving office was at the home of former Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on January 31.
The former President had joined his colleagues from his Cabinet in mourning Magoha who served in his government in various capacities.
He later joined former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at the funeral of Magoha in Yala, Gem on February 11, where he mourned the former CS as a dedicated servant leader who had the interest of Kenyans at heart.
