When the Garden State Arts Center first opened in 1968, artists and entertainers frequently booked for a week’s evenings of entertainments before moving on.

    Included in that week was always a luncheon with reporters on the first day to ensure tickets would be sold throughout the week. As a writer for The Courier, one of my assignments was to always attend the lunch, write that story, then attend the performance and write another review of the show.

  Liberace was always a favorite when he came each year, always in good humor, always with plenty of time to spend with reporters, always laughing at himself and telling stories about his expansive wardrobe. He always posed for photos and always brought new talent with him, so we reporters were also sure of getting albums or gifts of some kind at the luncheon.

  Here’s a story I wrote in 1979 after Liberace’s performance. He was great.

Mara New has accomplished much during her lifetime and in a lot of areas that those of you are reading this may not even know about. You may recognize the name Mara New as a Los Angeles film, stage and television actress or you may know her for the philanthropic work that she has done over the years. Throughout her lifetime she has been a model, was the driving force behind a 2004 fashion show in Los Angeles that highlighted the clothing of emerging, but not yet well-known fashion designers. She was a member of the dance ensemble at the Roger Hazel American Dance and Musical Theater Company in Australia. Mara New is also fluent in Italian, English, French and Spanish. In collaboration with her husband Ron New, Mara produced an album for highly respected Blues and Jazz singer Barbara Morrison, as well as the husband and wife team were the executive producers of a musical about the life of Blues singer Big “Mama” Thornton that was staged at the Stella Adler Theater in Hollywood. Born in Milan, Italy and hailing from the Beltrami House of Fashion that was launched in the early 1900's, Mara's family began as tailors and shoemakers and evolved into clothing designers and manufacturers in the early 1920's. To day the House of Beltrami is still active in Italy. In 2004, Mara's passion for clothes had her start the Golden Needle Awards to recognize and award emerging designers. Moving from Italy to France, From France to Australia where she graduated in Architecture and Studied Acting at "Karnak Playhouse" in Mossman, Queensland, Australia with Diane Cilento and dance with Roger Hazel, at the American Dance and Musical Theater Academy in Brisbane. Mara Appeared in many live shows and television productions during her stay in Australia. Moving to Canada to join a new Dance Group and being sidetracked into radio with her own Radio Show, she took a position with MTV (Multicultural Television) in Toronto, and during her stay in Canada, after seeing the Liberace show; she became friends with his protégée Marco Valenti who later became h
