My father, Austin Edwin Hilles (Micky) died 20 year ago today (July 16, 1995). He was the inspiration for this early poem of mine and the last lines in particular are an homage to him. I have written many poems about him over the years but this poem in particular recognizes what he tried to give me. I wrote this poem 40 years ago now.
The poem, Then, from my very first book, Look the Lovely Animal Speaks, published in 1980 by Turnstone Press. I wrote this poem in late 1975 with a pen and paper. Did not even have a typewriter yet. Seems a long time ago now that I wrote this (I was in Chris Wiseman’s creative writing class at the time – he is a master teacher and poet).
Then
poverty teaches no one
it’s just dark and small
like a revolver.
always ready to be
the final judge.
I remember dirty walls,
macaroni, television, and
dumping the slop pail.
there was no beauty
you just survived
between paydays.

drank every Friday

Robert Hilles (born November 13, 1951) is a Canadian poet and novelist,[1] who won the Governor General's Award for his poetry.
Life[]
Hillles was born in Kenora, Ontario.[2]
He studied at the University of Calgary (UC), earning a B.A. in Psychology and English in 1976. He also holds an M.Sc. in Educational Psychology, earned at UC in 1978.[2]
Hilles lived for many years in Calgary, Alberta and was active in the writing community there. For 10 years he was the managing editor of dandelion, the oldest surviving literary magazine in Alberta. He developed the magazine from a small pamphlet to one of the most respected literary magazines in Canada. During that time he also organized many successful readings featuring writers from across the country.
In 2001, he moved to British Columbia and has been active in the literary community there, especially on Salt Spring Island. He among other writers helped set up a scholarship for beginning writers on Salt Spring, and also organized a new reading series on the island.

Robert Hilles (born November 13, 1951) is a Canadian poet and novelist.[1]
He was born in Kenora, Ontario and grew up at Longbow Lake, Ontario. He left there in 1971 to attend university and later studied at the University of Calgary, earning a BA in Psychology and English in 1976.[2] He also holds an MSc in Educational Psychology, earned at the university in 1985.[3]
For ten years he acted as the managing editor of Dandelion, the oldest surviving literary magazine in Alberta.[2] In 2001, he moved to British Columbia and has been active in the literary community there, especially on Salt Spring Island where he lived for 17 years. With other writers, he helped to set up a scholarship for beginning writers on Salt Spring and also organized a new reading series on the island.[4] He moved to Nanaimo in 2019.
He served on the executive of the League of Canadian Poets for five years and in 1996 was sent by the League of Canadian Poets and the Department of Foreign Affairs
