Born to deaf parents and growing up with seven siblings outside of Detroit, Annetta Powell was no stranger to confronting challenges. Before age 25, it became overwhelmingly clear that she wasn’t going to reach millionaire status by living paycheck to paycheck. That’s when she made an executive decision to walk away from her blue-collar position as a materials coordinator with Johnson Controls, and take the reins to secure a promising financial future. She purchased her first real estate property for $18,000 and turned a profit of $24,000. Since 2002, she has purchased, renovated, and sold more than 600 properties, totaling $50 million in sales.
But the journey for Powell ain’t been no crystal stair. She clawed her way to reach every step only to have her progress impeded repeatedly with adversities such as domestic violence and a brutal sexual assault. Annetta Gene Powell, 80, of Artesia, NM passed away surrounded by the love of her family on December 26, 2024 in Carlsbad, NM.
Mrs. Powell was born on December 6, 1944, in Artesia, NM to Chester Mayes and Virginia Atwood. On December 18, 1980, she married the love of her life Robert Powell.
Annetta was most notably known as the proud owner of Craft Barn, where she shared her passion and love for crafting with others. Annetta was a former participant in organizations such as Altrusa and Eastern Star, where she built lasting friendships and made invaluable contributions to those she served.
Annetta was preceded by her husband, Robert Powell; father, Chester Mayes; mother, Virginia Mayes; brother, William (Bill) Mayes; and nephew, David Mayes.
eft to cherish her memory are daughter, Guyniece Ragland (husband, Rob); daughter, Shelly Harris (husband, Rob); son, Michael Powell (wife, Arren); seven grand children; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
