James Reynolds (composer)

American-German composer (born 1953)

James Reynolds (born 1953) studied contemporary music under John Adams, as well as percussion at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and composition in Cologne under Michael von Biel. Informed by many different influences – from Neue Musik, Broadway and European music theatre to avant-garde synthpop – Reynolds’ compositions explore the combination of words, sounds and images. He was Composer in Residence at the Stiftung Laurenz-Haus in Basel and Visiting Artist at the University of California, Santa Barbara. For over three decades, he has written music for literary productions, thrillers, fairytales and children's radio plays for West German Radio (WDR/Cologne). His compositions for music theatre, dance-theatre, film and television productions are performed and broadcast for and to an international audience.

    James Reynolds played out the adventures of childhood away from the sprawl of the cities, in the shadow of California's High Sierras. He fell under the spell of the mountains, of uncrowded country, and reveled in stories of wild times and bonanza gold. His initial interest in art centered upon a Frank Tenney Johnson calendar reproduction he saw at the age of thirteen.

    Following service in the South Pacific during World War II, Reynolds studied at the School of Allied Arts in Los Angeles. He then pursued a brief career in commercial art and soon went on to Hollywood to the motion-picture studios where he would remain for the next 15 years. In the tradition of the great illustrators before him, Reynolds kept a part of himself separate from the routine of his professional work. On his own time he remembered Frank Tenney Johnson and dreamed of unspoiled places against the mountains far from the clatter and clutter of the city. And he painted those places, at first for himself, and then for others who recognized his talent and shared his love of the land.

    Dr. James M. Reynolds was elected the 16th president of Millikin University, effective July 1, 2020.

    Previously, Dr. Reynolds served as president of Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, a position he held since 2012 after serving as interim president from August 2011 to February 2012. As president, Reynolds was responsible for the continued growth and development of the College and the function and success of all the integrated units on campus, including Development and Advancement, Academic Affairs, Student Life, Business and Finance, Athletics, External Programs and Enrollment Management.

    During his time at Wilmington, Dr. Reynolds led the creation of a new campus-wide strategic planning process and oversaw the successful reaccreditation of Wilmington College by the Higher Learning
