American R&B/soul group

Brutha was an American R&B and soul group consisted of five brothers: Anthony Harrell, Cheyenne Harrell, Grady Harrell III, Jacob Harrell and Jared Overton. The group was formed in 2002 and Brian McKnight first introduced them on the 2003 Soul Train Holiday Special.[1] The brothers were subsequently signed to Def Jam Records. The group's first album Brutha was released in December 2008.[2] Their reality show, Brothers to Brutha, documented their rise to fame.[3] In 2011, the three eldest brothers Grady, Anthony and Jared left the group to pursue solo careers, leaving the remaining two brothers Jacob and Cheyenne to form the duo Jake & Papa.[4][5][6]

The group includes brothers Grady, Cheyenne (aka Papa), Jacob (aka Jake), Jared (aka JR) and Anthony.Brutha first appeared on the reality television show, "Jermaine Dupri Presents: Brothers to "BRUTHA"" on BET."Brothers To BRUTHA" documents the rise of the group, and chronicles the group's lives towards the release of the self-titled debut CD, which hit stores on December 21st.

    Brutha biography

    The five brothers that make up Def Jam’s R&B super group Brutha were literally born to sing. Besides their innate ability to harmonize, brothers Grady, Jake, Anthony, Papa and Jared come from a long line of gifted musicians that includes their father, Grady Harrell, who released a series of R&B albums on RCA Records in the late ‘80s.

    After recognizing his sons’ natural talents, Harrell encouraged them to enter talent competitions in and around their South Central, Los Angeles homes. The boys eventually combined their efforts and in 2003, performed as a group for the first time at L.A.’s Key Club. After years of building their collective star, Brutha was offered a major label deal with Goodfellas Entertainment/Def Jam Records in 2007.

    “In that four years before we got our deal we were basically grinding as much as we could as a group,” says Jake, the sensual singer of the group. “We were all pounding the streets in LA doing shows, bar mitzvahs weddings, anything we could do because we loved performing.”
