Iran nuclear deal offers flicker of hope to Persians in Southern California

Parviz Gharib-Afshar fled Iran 35 years ago to protect his American wife and two children from the “overbearing religiosity” that swept through his home country. A journalist for Iran’s state-run media at the time, he always told himself he would go back once things got “a bit better.”

But that day never came.

So like so many others, he made Los Angeles home and began a new career in film here.

The nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers announced Tuesday offered a flicker of hope for the first time in a long time that his homeland and his adopted home could end decades of animosity.

“Iran is finally in the news for the right reasons,” said Gharib-Afshar, 72, who moved to the U.S. just as the 1979 Islamic Revolution began.

He hopes the deal will begin a thaw that could eventually allow him to travel back to Iran.

“The time to get my wish will come soon,” he added.

Southern California is home to the largest Persian community outside of Iran, with population estimates varying between 200,

Shiva Rose Afshar (born 1969) is an American actress, activist, blogger, and owner of a natural beauty-product line.[1][2] She is the former wife of actor Dylan McDermott.

Early life

Shiva Rose Afshar was born on 8 February 1969 in Santa Monica, California to an American mother and Iranian father.[1] Her father Parviz Gharib-Afshar (or Parviz Gharibafshar) is a former Iranian television host and actor.[3][4] She lived in Iran until 1979, when her family fled during the Iranian Revolution.[5][6]

Born in Tehran-Iran, Mr. Gharib-Afshar’s father was from Garakaan, Arrak, while his mother hailed from Tabriz, East Azerbaijan. After completing high school in Iran, Mr. Gharib-Afshar travelled to the United States to continue his education. He attended both San Francisco City College and later transferred to San Francisco State University. Following his Bachelor’s, he eventually earned his Masters from UCLA in Broadcasting. While attending college, Mr. Gharib-Afshar created and participated in various student stage productions- including Iranian student’s stage and then TV productions for Nowruz. He then created “The International Variety Show” at a local TV station that was known for featuring art and culture from different countries.

Where it all started

These experiences created an opportunity for him to work in the CBS-TV program “As Others See Us”- directed and produced by Mustapha Akkad, and distributed by United Artists and syndicated throughout both the US and overseas.
