The role of the corrections officer (CO) in America’s prison system today is widely misunderstood.[1] Superintendents, inmates, spouses and even the officers themselves often struggle to understand the exact nature of their role in the prison. I’ll always remember my very first day on the wings – I don’t think it’s something you forget. I was only 21 years old. After completing my training at HMP Wakefield, I was offered a position as a prison officer at HMP Cookham Wood women’s prison. At the time, only female prison officers could work in women’s prisons.

I remember getting out of the car on my first day and standing in the staff car park. It was so loud – it was pretty frightening, but unbeknown to me it was simply just yard time and that was the sound of 50 or so women chatting, laughing and exercising together outside.

After 12 months at HMP Cookham Wood, the rules changed, and women were allowed to work in male prisons. I moved and was one of just 2 female officers working on the landings at the newly-opened HMP Swaleside. Thankfully there are many more female prison officers these days.
