People flock to pay tribute to General Giap

Thousands of people from across Vietnam have paid homage to the lateGeneral Vo Nguyen Giap at his final resting place in the centralprovince of Quang Binh.

The well-wisherstravelled from far and wide to pay their respects in the morning of May 7– exactly 60 years to the day that the Giap-led armed forces sealedvictory in the battle of Dien Bien Phu.

LieutenantColonel Phan Thanh Bong, head of the Roon Border Guard Post, said thatbetween April 30 and May 7, over 95,000 people visited the General’sgrave in the Vung Chua – Dao Yen area of the province.

Theprovincial Border Guards High Command has dispatched more personnel toensure security in the area, while civil forces have been sent to guidevisitors.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the historical victory of Dien Bien Phu, the army and people of Vietnam remember and pay homage to General Vo Nguyen Giap whose name and career will forever be associated with Dien Bien Province. Over the past 60 years, the Dien Bien Phu victory and the life and glorious revolutionary career of the General were written in many special issues of Vietnam Pictorial.

In the 2nd issue of Vietnam Pictorial, a special issue to celebrate the Dien Bien Phu Victory was published in December 1954 there were many photos and pictures illustrating General Vo Nguyen Giap with the soldiers and people happily celebrating the victory. Sixty years have passed and Vietnam Pictorial has still preserved those precious pages.

General Vo Nguyen Giap — from liberation fighter to environmentalist

Few people from the 20th century can really claim to have changed history. One of them was General Vo Nguyen Giap, who led the Vietnamese people to defeat the French and American empires.

Giap died on October 4, aged 102.

Mainly remembered as a military leader, Giap was also one of Vietnam’s most significant political leaders. He was a revolutionary intellectual, an environmentalist and a campaigner for progressive change within Vietnam.

According to Vietnamese law, state funerals are only given to former heads of state or government. Defense minister for long periods, deputy prime minister was highest official post he rose to.

Yet the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) was always going to break the rules for Giap, regarded as a national treasure. The very suggestion of it provoked outrage. The mass outpouring for his funeral demonstrated the enormous esteem in which he was held.
