One Direction

English-Irish boy band

Not to be confused with One-way.

One Direction, often shortened to 1D, were an English-Irish popboy band formed in London in 2010. The group consisted of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik (until his departure in 2015), Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson. They became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time and were regarded as the biggest boy band in the world before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.

Formed on British singing competition The X Factor in 2010, the group was propelled to global success by social media. One Direction's debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" was a commercial and international success, reaching number 1 on the UK singles chart and being performed by the band at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony. They became the first British act to have their debut album top the charts on the Billboard 200 with Up All Night, and subsequently became the first band to have their first four albums debut at number 1 following the releases of Take Me Home, Midnight Memories, and Four.

‘Better Than Words’: How One Direction Became One of the Great Rock Bands of the 21st Century

A bathroom figures significantly in the origin stories of at least two classic One Direction songs. The first will be familiar to any fan: Songwriter and producer Savan Kotecha was sitting on the toilet in a London hotel room, when he heard his wife say, “I feel so ugly today.” The words that popped into his head would shape the chorus of One Direction’s unforgettable 2011 debut, “What Makes You Beautiful.”

The second takes place a few years later: Another hotel room in England — this one in Manchester — where songwriters and producers Julian Bunetta and John Ryan were throwing back Cucumber Collins cocktails and tinkering with a beat. Liam Payne was there, too. At one point, Liam got up to use the bathroom, and when he re-emerged, he was singing a melody. They taped it immediately. Most of it was mumbled — a temporary place-holder — but there was one phrase: “Better than words …” A few hours
