Biography

George Albert Coe was born in Monroe County, New York, on March 26, 1862, the son of Reverend George W. and Harriet Van Voorhis Coe. He graduated from the University of Rochester with a bachelor of arts degree in 1884 and a master of arts degree in 1888. Coe took both his bachelor of sacred theology (1887) and his Ph.D. (1891) from Boston University. Coe studied from 1890 to 1891 at the University of Berlin. He was a distinguished scholar in the field of religious education, particularly the psychological interpretation of religion.

Coe taught at the University of Southern California during the period 1888-1890. From 1891 to 1909, Coe taught at Northwestern University. While at Northwestern he held positions as acting professor of moral and intellectual philosophy (1891-1893), John Evans Professor of moral and intellectual philosophy (1893-1909), and honorary professor of philosophy and psychology of religion (1905-1951). George Albert Coe (1862-1951) addressed the 1903 convention that established the Religious Education Association; during a long career as a professor and writer, he so embraced and elaborated the goals and vision of the Association that he earned recognition as "the father of the religious education movement." His seminal 1917 A Social Theory of Religious Education fused liberal theology, psychology and sociology into one comprehensive and integrated whole that rivaled in scope John Dewey's Democracy and Education (1916).

George Albert Coe was born into a Methodist parsonage on March 26, 1862 in Mendon, Monroe County in western New York. He was the son of the Reverend George W. Coe and Harriet Van Voorhis to whom also a daughter, Hattie, was later born.

George Coe(1929 - 2015) was an American film, stage, television actor and voice artist. Outside of Archer he was best known for having been a cast member on the first season of Saturday Night Live, as well as for his work on various television shows.

He voiced the character of Woodhouse, the much-put-upon valet in the animated television series Archer from Season 1 thru Season 4.

George Coe passed away on July 18, 2015, at the age of 86 from a pre-existing illness.

The Season 8 finale "Auflösung" was dedicated to him.
