Joe Average is a self taught artist born in Victoria in 1957 but is now based in Vancouver. He began signing his colourful and bold Pop inspired paintings as Joe Average at 19 years of age. He was diagnosed with HIV at 27 years of age. Realizing the power to heal in Art, three years later he decided to commit himself his Art full time. On May 29, 2004 he was awarded the prestigious R.C.A. Award by the Queen for is his contribution to the Arts and to The Gay Community. His march flags for rallies have lined the streets and bathed the events in joyful hopeful colours and banners. His Art continues to delight and inspire across North America.
Average created the image 'One World, One Hope' that became Canada's First AIDS Awareness posted. It was used as the image for the XI International conference on AIDS in Vancouver in 1996 and it became the first AIDS Awareness postage stamp in Canada. IN MEMORIAM. ANYTHING BUT AVERAGE. The Canadian artist and AIDS activist known as Joe Average has died aged 67 in his home in Vancouver, reports The Art Newspaper. Despite the name he took on, there was little that was average about the artist born as Brock David Tebbutt. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1987, he dedicated his life to art and to helping others also living with AIDS, as well as combatting homophobia. Over the years, he became widely known for his signature, brightly colorful and bold pop artworks. He was often compared to Keith Haring. Joe Average, CM OBC RCA (born Brock David Tebbutt; 10 October 1957 – 24 December 2024) was a Canadian artist who resided in Vancouver, British Columbia. Diagnosed HIV+ at age 27, Average made the decision to commit the rest of his life to art, and to challenge himself to live by his art.[1]
Average was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on 10 October 1957.[2] He frequently donated work to charitable causes, such as Vancouver's annual Art for Life auction benefitting the Vancouver Friends for Life Society.[1] His work was used for such projects as A Loving Spoonful (a charity which provides meals to people with terminal illnesses) and the Davie Village.[3] Average was also selected to judge submissions for Vancouver's AIDS memorial and anti-homophobia posters.
Average was known for his cheerful, colourful, cartoon-like work, including images of flowers, animals and insects, and people. He received many awards and honors, including civic merit awards, the Caring Canadian Awar
