Vievee Francis is the author of three books of poetry: Blue-Tail Fly (Wayne State University Press, 2006), Horse in the Dark (winner of the Cave Canem Northwestern University Poetry Prize for a second collection, Northwestern University Press, 2011) and Forest Primeval (winner of the Hurston Wright Legacy Award and the 2017 Kingsley-Tufts Poetry Award, Northwestern University Press, 2016). Her work has appeared in numerous print and online journals, textbooks, and anthologies, including POETRY, Best American Poetry 2010, 2014, 2017, 2019, and Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry. She has been a participant in the Cave Canem Workshops, a Poet-in-Residence for the Alice Lloyd Scholars Program at the University of Michigan, and teaches poetry writing in the Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop (USA, UK, and Barbados). American poet

Vievee Elaure Francis () is an American poet. She is an associate professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College. She earned an MFA from the University of Michigan in 2009, and she received a Rona Jaffe Award the same year. Vievee is the author of three collections of the poetry, the third of which, Forest Primeval, won the 2016 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for poetry^[1] and the 2017 Kingsley Tufts (Kingsley and Kate Tufts Poetry Awards) poetry award.^[2]

Personal life

Francis is a native of Texas having been born in San Angelo.^[3] She lived and worked for 15 years in Detroit, Michigan, where she was instrumental in fostering a literary community for youth, young-adult and adult poets.^[4] From there, she moved to Swannanoa, North Carolina while teaching at Warren Wilson College (undergraduate) and North Carolina State University.^[5] From North Carolina State she went on to gain tenure at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Francis is the author of The Shared World (Northwestern University Press, 2023); Forest Primeval (TriQuarterly Books, 2015), winner of the 2017 Kingsley Tufts Award; Horse in the Dark (Northwestern University Press, 2012), winner of the Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize; and Blue-Tail Fly (Wayne State University Press, 2006).

The poet Adrian Matejka describes her poems as “revelations—of memory, of dust, of the cotton and marginalia strung together to make a history.” Of her own poetry, Francis says, “I’m very much saying that how African American women are defined is inhuman in its narrowness, and that I, for one, am not going to allow it.”

Francis’s honors include the 2021 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry. The recipient of fellowships from Cave Canem, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation, Francis teaches poetry and poetics at Dartmouth Co
